Professor Max Standage

Professor Max Standage is currently Provost of the Gold Coast and Logan campuses of Griffith University. He was born in New Zealand and obtained his BSc and PhD degrees from the University of Otago. He has worked in the UK, USA and Australia.

Max joined the academic staff of Griffith University in 1976 and was appointed to a Personal Chair in 1992. He was co-founder of the laser physics research laboratory at Griffith University and has had research interests in quantum physics, laser spectroscopy, atom optics and atomic collision physics. He has served on the Chemical/Physical Sciences Panel of the Australian Research Council and Chaired the Instrumentation and Scientific Instruments Priority Panel. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics and has been the International Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Conferences on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions.

Max has held a number of senior management positions at Griffith University as a Dean and Pro-Vice Chancellor with at various times responsibilities for the Health and Science Groups, and the Quality and Community Partnerships portfolios. He has led a number of new initiatives at Griffith including the establishment of the Logan campus, and the development of the Gold Coast campus, including the initial planning for the Griffith Medical, Dental and Oral Health, and Pharmacy Schools.

Apart from his scientific interests, he has particular interests in strategic planning of university campuses, commercialisation of university research, knowledge precincts and their role in the development of knowledge intensive industries, and the role of universities in community engagement.

He has been a Director of the Queensland Parallel Supercomputing Facility, the CRC Water Quality, and the Distributed Systems Technology CRC. He is currently a Director of the Logan Economic Development Board, the Gold Coast Innovation Centre and a member of the Gold Coast Regional Economic Development Board.
